What is an anxiety attack?
This is not an official definition of anxiety. Nor is it something you would find in a medical textbook. This is simply a small excerpt that explains what it feels like when someone that suffers from an anxiety order has an anxiety attack. When I have discussions with people about anxiety they often feel that it is very far removed from people they come in contact with daily. When I then explain that I have suffered from anxiety for the past three years they are surprised. Most people feel that they suffer from anxiety, and I don't think there is a person on this planet that is anxiety free. But people with anxiety disorders can find simple, daily activities very difficult to cope. Not only that, but they begin to have panic attacks when their fight or flight response reacts in the "wrong" way. This is perhaps the best way I can explain it. I am sitting in a room with a few colleagues. We are having our biweekly meeting that I have been having for the past four months. As I'm sitting there my breathe starts to become shallow, I have butterflies in my stomach (similar to what you would feel if you drove down a big hill fast), the room seems to be getting smaller and all I can think is.... "I NEED TO GET OUT NOW!!!". Because I am a rational person, I move slowly to the door and quietly exit the room. I walk to the nearest washroom and lock myself in a stall. I take a few minutes to start regulating my breathing and I bring myself down. It takes a few minutes to get myself back to where I feel composed. I then wash my hands and head back to the room. As I enter the door, the meeting is still going on. Not a single soul knew that I had just had an anxiety attack. That is what it can be like living with this emotional disorder. What happens is very real and can be VERY scary for the person have the attack. Educate yourself on the various emotional disorders, because chances are, you work with someone that has one... or perhaps it is closer to home and a family member or friend suffers.
